Just tried to drive through Zion - no go. An avalanche off Checkerboard mesa covered the road. Should be open by this evening.

I asked if I could go down to the Checkerboard Mesa Viewpoint to take pictures, and the answer was a pleasant but definitive "NO".

Should have pulled out a Happy Hooker and said you were there to assist in the probing for the victim's. On a related note, I've seen many people snowboard and ski off the lower end of checkerboard.

Kurt....Having a hard time visualizing this as I have climbed it. Getting onto the thing is steep enough to kill ya if its skiable. What were they doing? Taking a ledge system in from the east side? Very carefully if so?

The last time(can't remember what year)2-3 ago. They were just hiking up the snow.( About 1' worth). This was a group of snowboarders. They could only get up about 150-yds. They even built a jump towards the bottom. I'm sure Tom has seen similar.

OK, I think I get it now. The snow was deep enough to get purchase. I love doing Angel's Landing in the snow. I found 3-4 inches treacherous but when there was 18-20 inches one could kick a deep step and feel quite secure. Must be like that? R

  9. Ram, I drove from Kanab to SLC late yesterday, easily 18-24" in MCJ to Orderville. There would have plenty of snow along the east road to Zion Pete

    - don't tell me we're agreeing again....

On the flank, on the runout on the northwest side. Good kid-sliding or traying, more than sledding or skiing.
