Looking for any suggestions on a Winter Canyon in Zion. I have done a lot canyoneering but never in the Winter. I have a lot of Winter experience mountaineering and other such adventures but never canyoneering. Are there any canyons in Zion that are not too extreme in the Winter? Just looking for ideas for the near future thanks.

Did not mean to post this under trip reports. Can't find out how to erase it. My apologies

First rule of Winter Canyon Club is do canyons you have done before, so you can make a reasonable guestimate of how they would be in winter.

We did Pine Creek on Christmas Day. It was great. Everything in Zion that holds water is full of water.

There are lots of additional considerations here, but...

The but is you can figure them out, if you try hard (and perhaps search the archives here on the CC).

Personally, I'd say go somewhere besides Zion if you have no winter canyoneering experience.

    I concur.

Zion has a lot of altitude difference, and a lot of shade. These tend to make it a poor winter venue if it has snowed, as it has done this year. Better places include... well, almost anywhere else. VRG is low altitude. North Wash has relatively flat canyons with few rappels and a lot of narrow canyon action that keeps people warm (and is safe to do, even when choked with snow).

Our annual Christmas madness trip is in Zion, because we know the canyons well and can select a target that will be epic based on current conditions (but not too epic, except when it is)...
