SPRINGDALE, UT: Due to unforeseen delays in construction at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center parking lot, Zion National Park is closing the Visitor Center temporarily and moving most operations over to the Zion Human History Museum, located approximately one half-mile from the South Entrance. Wilderness Permits will be available at the Zion Nature Center, near the South Campground.

The Visitor Center will reopen in time for normal shuttle operations to start on March 15, 2015 with extremely limited parking. Visitors are encouraged to park in Springdale and ride the free shuttle to the park entrance. From there, they will walk across the pedestrian entrance, which will lead them to the Visitor Center, park bookstore , and the park shuttle, which will bring visitors into Zion Canyon.

The shuttle system services nine shuttle stops in the town of Springdale and nine shuttle stops inside the park. Both shuttles are supported by park entrance fees and are fare-free. While the shuttle system is in operation, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles. Confirmed guests at the Zion Lodge may drive to the lodge, but cannot travel past the lodge or make any stops along the way.

The spring shuttle schedule is as follows:
    Zion Canyon Shuttle ·

    • Starts at 7:00 a.m. from the Zion Canyon Visitor Center Shuttle Stop. ·
    • Last shuttle traveling up canyon from the visitor center will depart at 7:45 p.m.
    • ·Last shuttle returning from the Temple of Sinawava is 8:30 p.m.
    Springdale Town Shuttle
    • First shuttle departs from the Majestic View Shuttle Stop in Springdale at 8:10 a.m.
    • Last shuttle into town will depart from Zion Canyon Theater Shuttle Stop at 8:30 p.m.
Hours of operation will expand starting Sunday, May 17, 2015. Shuttles depart from designated stops every seven to ten minutes during the middle of the day and approximately every 15 to 30 minutes in the early morning and late evening. Please check the park newspaper for the latest schedule.

3-D Laser Scanning of Zion Tunnel will Result in Short Intermittent Closures on Weekdays between March 12 and 27, 2015

Zion National Park will be using a digital three-dimensional scanner to map the inside of the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway Tunnel to assess its condition. Visitors through the tunnel should expect 20-30 minute delays due to tunnel closures on weekdays between March 12 and 27, 2015.

The tentative project schedule is as follows:

    • March 12, 2015- The tunnel will be closed 3 times for approximately 20 minutes each.
    • March 16-20, 2015- From 6:00-8:00 a.m., the tunnel will be closed for up to 25 minutes at a time.
    • March 23-27, 2015- The scanning may be finished by this time, but if not, it will continue on the same 6:00-8:00 a.m. schedule as the week before.
The park's cultural resources staff leased the 3-D laser scanners in order to create a digital three-dimensional model of the tunnel. Using this 3-D model, the park will be able to document the tunnel construction materials and methods in a way that would be impossible through any other means without closing the tunnel for extensive periods of time. The digital 3-D model of the tunnel may then be used to assess the condition of the tunnel, assess any damage, obtain measurements of tunnel elements, and assist in park planning.
