Four long years ago, the Yahoo Canyons Group had a discussion about moving the Group to a new, more modern forum. One of the big concerns about doing that was the possibility of losing an archive that dates back to May of 2000. This archive reflects a great deal of history, recording how canyoneering became popular in the age of information. The volume of techniques, ideas and adventures recorded within is staggering. But Yahoo was poor at organizing threads and its search engine was and is primitive.

It appears that much of the conversation is starting to thrive in a new modern forum called the Canyon Collective. http://canyoncollective.com/

The owners of the Yahoo Group feel that the Yahoo Group should remain open and active, especially to preserve the archive. So the yahoo group will continue, but perhaps with much less activity. Our biggest concern has always been the archive, and what will happen if the yahoo groups are deprecated, would the archive be lost? If the archive could be preserved, we considered where and how? The priority being to keep the archive free, future-proof and easily accessible to all.

Several months back, we inquired among those forming the Canyon Collective, if it was possible to preserve our archive in a more modern form, and have a place where it would be organized better and with a great search ability. While it was not a priority of the Collective organizers, they went to great lengths to accommodate our request and have reorganized the archive and have provided us a place where we can be more effective in accessing the treasure trove of information. We thank them for their generosity.

The owners of the Yahoo Group have set March 4th, 2013 as the date to for the new archive system to be available on Canyon Collective.. It is our hope that everyone will continue to browse this amazing resource either on this group, or in their new location.

Agreed - awesome idea. There's a lot of good stuff in there, and when it comes right down to it, text information in a post format, even with hyperlinks within itself, is relatively easy to archive. Great plan, folks!
