Yes. Barrier has been top roped and rated "5.8 slick as snot." in the conditions it was done (slightly on the dry side), using the moki steps. After tha,t with some creative teamwork, complex route finding, exposed traverses and good thermal protection, Lava Point would be the limit, using the Brereton bypasses. But don't. Descend this one
I have not hiked up it, but it does seem like a nice hike going up to Barrier Falls. It does, however, seem like a LONG hike when coming out. @Scott Patterson knows some side hikes that are worthwhile. Tom
Perhaps going directly up the falls, but....there is another climbing route that can get you into the GA that I estimate to be around 5.7-8. K
Also, in winter (like last week), I would say it is worth every penny to approach it from the bottom.
Canyoneering USA used to have a 1965 (I think) trip report of a group climbing up to the Black Pool from the bottom. For most people though, Barrier Falls will stop them.
Like the long off-trail crusher of a day: Grapevine to Right Fork, Right Fork south up Trail Canyon to the pass between Cougar Mountain and Hoodooville, down the south face of the pass to Terry which plops into Coalpits, and down down down to Highway 9. 12 miles on a map, closer to 15 under foot, nice day, won't see a soul. Good clean water from a very active seeps (even in drought) in Trail Canyon before the big ups start near the point 5285 (on Trails Illustrated map), so you can save the weight til then. Eyes open for elk.
Thx for the idea, Kyler, Tess and I went and did this on Sunday. After coming down the pass we opted to stay high on the bench and headed straight south and dropped directly into Coal Pits, instead of dropping into Terry Wash. GPS showed 13.7 miles.
Just wanted to close out the discussion of climbing barrier falls; I find it unlikely that given the choice one would climb the falls when an obvious and better route exists to the right of the falls. In theory, let's say in winter, one could camp in the Grand Alcove from the bottom. The Barrier Falls bypass has one very short 5.7 move. Here's your photo: K
