Technical canyons in Deso?

I have not researched at all yet but I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any technical canyon opportunities in Desolation canyon. I will be floating this section in July for six days, enough time to work in some side canyons if possible.

There are big canyons that might have some drops (which probably wouldn't be interesting from a technical canyoneering standpoint), but IMHO the best advice would be to leave the ropes behind and focus on hiking to all the ruins and rock art instead.   Some of the best rock art sites are in Flat Canyon and Rock Creek, but there are many more.    Rock Creek and Florence Creek both have ruins not far from the river (there are probably more as well).   I'm not sure if you are supposed to hike Florence Creek any more though?   Other rock art sites are:   Rock House Canyon Gold Hole Rincon Lighthouse Rock Three Canyon Florence Creek Price River Coal Canyon Chandlar Creek

Support for Scott's comments. We go once or twice a year and I have never seen anything of note. Big, wide opens canyons. Great hikes though!

We just picked up a permit for May 22nd. I will let you know if we run into anything interesting canyon-wise along the way. I will also chat up my friend Paul; he has done the run about 20 times and has hiked many of the side canyons. Will pass anything on if/when I find out. We should have a ton of time to hike and explore with the May flows.

Thanks for the info guys. Unless you find something worthwhile Phil, I will probably leave the gear and plan on some great hikes. We launch July 5th and are taking six kids between ages 6 and 11. Can't wait.
