Stop and go rappel

    I was reading through the archives and found this post made by Rich 18 years ago:

    There is a system called the "stop and go" (described in "Canyoning" by Stefan Hofmann) that allows you to rappel, stop with hands free, resume rappel, etc. You can use the same rig as an ascender, so you can go up and down the rope without changing between different pieces of gear. This method will only work with a figure eight, preferably a square one like those made by Petzl.

    I googled it to no avail. How is this done with a figure 8 without and autoblock?
