Just returned from a week of canyoning in the Spanish Pyrenees. Have been a canyoneer in Utah and Arizona for thirty years, have done all the classics in Zion and elsewhere, man, nothing compares with the Pyrenees. Went with Koen of Poco Loco Adventures in Tella, Spain. European canyoning technique is light years ahead of what I've seen anyone doing here, and the canyons themselves are of mind bending beauty and sportiness. There is literally nothing here that comes close when it comes to plunge pools, jumps, slides, water clarity, waterfalls, and incredibly beautiful raps. Kind of a cross between a canyon and a water park. Upper Kolob with good flow and rapping thru the lower calf creek falls in Utah are the closest approximations here, but Spain is just incredible. If you ever get the chance--do it. Go to Spain. I did not know what I was missing. Have canyoneered in Hawaii also, although great, Spain tops this as well. Thanks for a great intro to the world's (so far) best canyons Koen! LeRoy

Been there, done that, ~but missed the rendezvous this year : ( ~ and I wholeheartedly agree that Koen is one of the nicest guys on the planet! ; ) Oh, and the Spanish canyons? Some of the prettiest I've ever seen! My first flowing water canyons ever were in the Spanish Pyrenees, and they were absolutely incredible (like the stuff that really cool dreams are made of). They are a different animal altogether than the CP canyons. The ironic thing for me, is that when I first heard of the sport of canyoneering, the only thing that sounded less than ideal about it was the part about "swimming". I've obviously changed my tune, and it happens to be one of my FAVORITE parts! That and REALLY LOOOONG rappels!

Have Oh, I forgot one important detail: no giardia or leptospirosis in the Pyrenees canyons I did. Made all the water jumps, swims, etc. much more enjoyable and worry free, having had Giardia three times from my hikes here in Utah.
