A personal experience with a similar event occurred last year in Yosemite when my climbing partner (climbing rope) and I were about 600 feet from the lip of El Cap and a rock fall occurred in our general vicinity. It was around 11pm so we didn't get a visual but it was an ominous "oh crap" sound lasting 12-15 seconds, i.e. continues thunder/Alabama tornado like (which I can now relate to).

The next morning we received radio contact on top from the park geologist in the valley wanting our take on it. According to him this particular event was triggered by a light earthquake, epicenter some 30 miles south of the canyon. He stated that major rock fall events are rare for the park...??

I recall a story of a rock fall from Glacier Point, was it? That was caused by an earthquake too. Apparently a pair of climbers were high on a route that was finger cracks. They were on the belay ledge snacking when the earth quake hit and the finger crack just closed shut! It left them no recourse but to wait to get plucked from the wall and the route is no longer a route. My mind slips back and contemplates. What if they were climbing the crack when that hit? YIKES!! R
