For most stuff, I prefer a simple webbing harness like the Petzl Niagara (pic below). I got a bunch of them for $10 ea. a few years back, but stock running low. Every now and then, it's nice to have padding or wider supporting straps, so would be ideal to have low-bulk, removable padding (as Petzl Aspir, but less bulky). Looking fwd. to seeing what comes of @Bootboy 's efforts.

    Edit: more features
    • removable padding (optional)
    • separate attachment point for chest ascender (e.g. small sewn loop)
    • butt-pro compatible
    • movable, replaceable gear loops

The issue now is working on the geometry for comfort. I've never used a harness made from only 45mm webbing. It's obviously not going to be as comfortable something made from 2" or 3".

Hank, how do you rate the comfort of your petzl harness to that of, say, an alpine bod?

I haven't tried a BOD on since the early 90s. At that time, the harness was unwearable for me (I named it the "Ball Lock" harness). Others have had this problem with that design. Also, the first iteration of the Petzl Canyon harness was "Ball Lock 2"

In general, webbing harnesses are ok if you don't have to hang too long. I have done many raps in the 200 - 300' range wearing a webbing harness, and a fair amount in the 600'+ range. Keep moving and all is well (like a wetsuit). If forced to stop and hang, better have a way to relieve the pressure.

    hmm...

Im displeased with how not comfortable my current prototype is compared to my alpine bod. Maybe starting again. Have gobs of webbing and hardware coming...

also, may be switching out the above assembly and ditching the d ring. Whats pictured above is heavier than I'd like. My main directives are light, simple, effective, and durable, in no particular order

    Made some changes.

This is the first one out the door. A few tweaks on the first run of them, but this is basically what they'll be.

Colored mesh and a slightly different collar will be the major differences.

Large are grey and blue, medium are grey and red.

Looking to add green to the lineup as soon as I find the materials.

    More pics coming. [IMG]
