Photos from this weekend in Zion. Can you name the canyons? Canyon 1 (Photos taken in exploratory walk through slot without any gear. Came back with helmets and gear to complete slot.): Canyon 2:
Well, you don't walk by this slot on the way to other stuff, but kinda looks like the east fork of Fat Man, but a tad wetter. The 2nd canyon is the Right Fork of North Creek in the first 1/4 of the way down the slot below the Grand Alcove proper. Now with you doing the Right Fork and perhaps from Lava...that would put you walking by Blue Canyon section of Upper Wildcat Canyon. Never been, so just a wild guess.
Yes. Canyon 1 is Wildcat Canyon itself and Canyon 2 is the slot in Grand Alcove that most bypass. Wildcat Canyon actually has some nice slots which we explored. Since we took three days, we had plenty of time to explore things.
Is the main Wildcat, the area between the canyon that comes in from the west and The Seeps? Fine canyon section that.
I was just about to post that. It looks like the left fork direct area by the seeps. That was a spot where I felt the afternoon slipping away. I think we hit the black hole after dark. It made for an interesting swim for a couple of rookie canyoneers. Ken
This is actually higher up Blue Creek/Wildcat Canyon than the Seeps. Everything was flowing (every little side drainage and the main Blue Creek had flowing water) so we were able to stay well east of the Seeps. There are actually at least two nice slots in Wildcat Canyon well above the seeps. Also of interest is that we found signs of a (very old) constructed trail in Wildcat Canyon and in the drainage south of the seeps up to the saddle between the Left and Right Forks. Several years ago we found scraps of trail in Trail Canyon (side canyon of Right Fork) and an old (presumably) sheep camp north of The Bishopric. My thought now is that they must be part of the same old trail system. At one time, there must have been and old and presumably rugged trail up Right Fork to Trail Canyon, across the rugged plateau and into Phantom Valley and then on the east side of upper Right Fork, crossing somewhere and up to the saddle, down to Left Fork and out Wildcat Canyon. That country is all really rugged, but I still think that it was part of an old sheep route and Native American route.
Speaking of more flowing water, Double Falls was actually Quadruple Falls. What was nice about the Right Fork is that after experiencing the ridiculous crowds in the main canyon, we didn't see a soul for the next three days until we were a few feet from the parking lot.
