From one of my far-flung correspondants...

Last weekend, during the cold and snow, there was a group of friends from Colorado who rented lots of gear from us to do Mystery and Keyhole.

As far as I know, they are the first to do Mystery this season. They were able to drive about 100 yards past the paved part of North Fork Road before the snow stopped them. Then they hiked a few miles, and glissaded down the snowy slopes until they reached the mouth of Mystery (they were experienced mountain and ice climbers, and said the glissading was the most fun part of their day). As expected, there was still lots of snow and ice in Mystery. At one point, I think the second-to-last rappel, ice from a frozen waterfall had fallen to create a "10-foot-tall ice cone." They set up a handline to safely get over it. The last pool was completely frozen over and they walked across it. These people also did Keyhole (8 of them) shop-to-shop in just over 2 hours.

    Thanks Amy -

    Tom
