they indicate the 'southeast' part of the state in a press release

"On Nov. 18, the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau was working with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to conduct a count of big horn sheep in a portion of southeastern Utah ... The exact location of the installation is not being disclosed since it is in a very remote area and if individuals were to attempt to visit the area, there is a significant possibility they may become stranded and require rescue"

I was hoping there would be a clue in the EXIF data but nope. It would be fun to find.

I think they were careful to avoid any identifying information. Love the toy on the map!!!

Is this an April 1 thing that they forgot to release?

I guess it's like a bolt. Anyone can put it in, anyone can take it out...

I'm not approving this addition to a backcountry area, but what a delightful distraction this story has provided. One that is sorely needed for 2020! (I was able to get about 45 miles from it's actual location with my prediction...yeah, Me!) Now let's see a viral story about backcountry use ethics.

Here are the best of the comments from the Trib:

    It's Everett Reuss' tombstone.

It popped up after Donald lost. The earth is excited.

    Maybe it's donny's escape pod??

Somehow I thought it would be bigger.

It’s the Deep State radio tower. Mikey Lee, beware!!!

The mother ship of 5G COVID-19?

I would consult with a HAL 9000 computer before doing anything rash. We all know what happened the last time humans dug one of these things up.

    Dave says leave it alone.

    I DIDN'T DO IT!

    Time to start a cult!

I am pleased they ruled out extraterrestrial, because prosecuting the case would have taken a millennium.

    Finally uncovered - Montezuma's treasure.

Just looking at it, the proportions of the object are clearly not 1-4-9. It's not from the Space Odyssey.

Better call up Burgess Owens to see what Qanon says about this.

If I were them I would not touch that monolith, you could find yourself somewhere near the orbit of Jupiter in the company of a mad computer.

Repent! It is a sentinel sent from Kolob!

A huge evolving problem solved quickly...and in a way that fits nicely with the discovery. I hope it ends here. Or perhaps with a story on leave no trace ethics!

    Monolith removed?? How unfortunate. ;)

@Ali Miller just found a few artifacts this past Friday to add to the odyssey story.

Guys, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but... it was as if someone, ... or something... had -placed- them there. :jawdrop:

If you rewind to previous overlays on google earth, it seems to have appeared between 8/17/2015 and 10/20/2016.

Over 4 years before somebody found it. Really long play by the artist.

Wonder how much longer it would have been had the helicopter not seen it, and it was left to hikers to discover...
