I'm interested to know how easy it is to get a Kolob Canyon permit? Are these limited? If I show up on Thurs Jul 24 (having checked flowrates) with the desire to get a Kolob Permit and a Boundary permit will my 12 hr drive from Denver be for nought?

    Thanks! -
    Forrest

    Boundary permit

Boundary is outside the park, so no permit required (unless exiting through the Narrows).

Boundary does not require a permit. Please do not ask for it.

Group size limit of 6. Overall quota of 12 persons. Not available on line.

    Hard to say.

MIA two days in a row - PRICELESS!

There is also Pipe Spring Canyon to do up there, though you might want a long rope for that.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. Neither are online and both are right on/near the boundary, so I was very confused.

Thinking I'll arrange for going out the narrows one day permits allowing, as we haven't been in narrows yet (gasp).

Thanks for mentioning Pipe Springs. ARE there other recommendations for scenic, intermediate-advanced technical canyons w/o too many people?? (in Zion)

We may not be quite ready for something like Imlay unless it is brimming.

Imlay IS Full. Had a good storm last night, probably got it.

    But...

Kolob in a day out the Narrows is a tough day. If you are not up for Imlay, it seems that you would also not be up for this... though Kolob is more a matter of a long, rough hike.

There are plenty of rarely-done canyons in Zion. But in this heat...

Did Kolob last weekend. Heat was no issue. Just don't be in a hurry and hit the MIA about 5pm. Will be shaded and cool for the whole hike out. Third trip up the MIA in 4 weeks. The propoganda surrounding the MIA is way over hyped.

For what it is worth, if Kolob doesn't have flow, I would choose Boundary over it

Tom we aren't worried about moving efficiently as a group, rappelling, reasonably low-flow class C or long, strenuous days (or bivy) - we have less pothole experience - our difficult canyons all being in Ouray. So that is the hesitation on Imlay/Heaps.

I descended Boundary and continued thru the Narrows with my family last week. We camped just before the last swimmer in Kolob. It was a great adventure!
