Kaleidescope (Canyon Names)

Discussion in 'Archives - Yahoo Canyons Group' started by scott patterson, Jun 9, 2011.

  1. In previous canyons discussions, it was argued/debated that first one to publish a name of a canyon gets the name.   One example (out of many):   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canyons/message/1306   I guess the big question would be "when was the name Kaleidescope first published?".   (Please correct any errors/sources not know about):   The first that I know of that the name "Choprock Canyon" (rather than Choprock Bench) was published was in February 1983 (Kelsey), but he apparently got the name of the canyon from the BLM office whom was using it before then(?).   The 1983 book, however, refers to the entire canyon itself rather than just the the South/East Fork.   It would be interesting to know when the name "Choprock" was first used in canyon, rather than bench connotation.  Apparently "Widemouth" was the main fork was known in the 1920's.   The first that I know of that published the "East Fork Choprock Canyon" proper was in 1997 (Allen).   Kelsey was first to publish(??) beta on the canyon in 2002 under the name "South Fork Choprock Canyon".   In 2002? the canyon was published as "Moe Slot" (Jones).   Perhaps the canyon may have been published somewhere else as well??????   How long had the name existed before published?   The first I know of "Kaleidescope" being published was in 2008 (but I assume that it possible that it could have been published earlier?), but the name was first used in June 1982 by the Turville crew, referring to the East/South Fork proper.   Which should be the "proper" name (if there is such a thing) of the canyon?   East Fork Choprock, South Fork Choprock, or Kaleidescope (when was the name first published?)?   The same could be applied to all other canyons as well.

Sometimes. Sometimes a name comes along later that just catches on. Eye of the Needle was known as Cave and South Fork Oak for many years.

I had been doing the canyon regularly for 8 years at that time. I lurked on this board and invited several of the folks I found interesting from posts. Tom was brave enough to come. Afterward, he put a Rave together and asked me what name I wanted to call it. On an impulse I said Moe Slot, honoring my pal Kari Moe. She was a regular partner of mine, including my 1st descent of this canyon and was also on hand for "The Escape From Heaps." It was my first involvement in a Rave and I had no idea what impact that throw away name would have. Kaleidoscope was a much harder/dangerous canyon than what was generally known by this community at that time (mostly Zion classics), so I was in no rush to have it generally known. I did not want to have anyone get hurt, or a drowning or get stuck in there, to be on my conscience.   > The first I know of "Kaleidescope" being published was in 2008 (but I assume that it possible that it could have been published earlier?), but the name was first used in June 1982 by the Turville crew, referring to the East/South Fork proper.

Yes Dennis first mentions it here http://www.math.utah.edu/~sfolias/canyontales/tale/?i=turville Then Jenny Hall West started engaging some of us, joining us on trips. She told the story of the first descent of Kaleidoscope. She said that the canyon changed in a wonderful way around every turn. What a wonderful description of the canyon and now that it is known that she, along with Mike Bogart were the first through AND that they came up with such an excellent name, that name is starting to catch on. The old name honors a nearby bench and has no soul, as far as I am concerned. So me and others have started to call it Kaleidoscope, adding "AKA Choprock" to reduce confusion for the time being. Time and the public will determine what the place will be called in the long run. Great name. Original descenders. No brainer for me. What do others think? What will it end up being called? Ram

i have the origin of the name choprock on the canyon name database, scott. steve allen told me the following:

“Burns Ormand from Boulder ran cattle extensively in the area starting in the early 1920s (his name is etched in a wall in Choprock Canyon from 1927). He helped build the trail from Choprock to Neon, but again had no name [for Neon Canyon]. He was familiar with the Golden Cathedral, but as a stock watering place and a darn good place to corral his cows! (And Choprock, called Widemouth by the cowboys, was named because Burns and others had to ‘Chop the Rock’ to make the stock trail out of the canyon.)”
