Hi new to the forum, pretty new to canyoneering and love it. Been down to zions 3 times now canyoneering and totally love it, planning on my next trip now and wondering what would be suggested for earliest safe time for a fairly newby with a few total newbys? All my other trips have been late summer but want to make it out earlier this year, was thinking June but wondering if May would be good? Planning pine creek and mystery canyons of possible, thanks

The canyon depends on when you can go. There is a thread on here about Zion & current conditions. I've heard trip reports already on Pinecreek but haven't seen anything yet on Mystery.

Plan on lots of cold water

You mostly just need to plan on colder water in April. I've encountered ice in Pine Creek in early April. Cold but doable if you are efficient.

Mystery is often not open in April as permits are not issued when the Narrows are over 150 cfs. Pretty much been closed for the last couple weeks. Likely closed for a few more weeks as this has been a big snow year.

Access is often tougher too as snow is commonly found on approaches and storms can make the North Fork road impassable.

Usually, by Jun alot of canyons can be done. Some in Apr-May depends on spring run-off. Echo can still be closed until Jul-Aug easy. Also, it's called Zion National Park.

I have only been doing this a few years now, but I typically wait on Zions until better places are too hot and miserable. For me mid June through August are the prime Zions time.

By the way for some reason that I can't quite figure out, people seem to get real anxious when they hear people say Zions so I find myself saying it more often. Maybe it's like fingers on a chalk board and I am just a jerk????

Wet canyons in Zion can be very cold this time of year. That said, I've done Spry in March and it was very pleasant (although we did walk on some snow.) I had a friend in Pine Creek a month ago in leaky drysuits who felt lucky to escape alive.
