    Success!
The packrafting rules in Grand Canyon National Park have been overhauled in response to a Coalition of American Canyoneers request early last year.

The prior rule required "walking the river bank when possible" and that led to a lot of confusion about which routes were possible and/or acceptable. The new rules eliminate the "walk when you can" rule and extend the packraft distance to 8 miles on a backcountry permit (the previous rule was 5 miles).

I call this a win. Was hoping for a distance of 10-15 miles, but its a step in the right direction. Thanks to all involved for advocating for this.

That's still in the works by way of an update to the Backcountry Management Plan. This was done at CAC's request through a Superintendent’s Compendium while we wait for the BCMP to be completed. http://www.americancanyoneers.org/gcnp/bcmp/draft-eis/

    Copy.

I thought was due out this past summer. Do they have a rough idea of when the new BCMP will be released and implemented?

Looks more like toward the end of this year. Since it was apparent that the new RABT (packraft) rules in the BCMP wouldn't be in place very soon, the CAC asked the park to issue a formal document (Superintendent's Compendium) to clarify the two issues that were causing some permit apps to be rejected.
