I heard from Ram this morning. There were twenty-two participants in the Black Hole on New Year's Day. Dave Black went in and fixed the exit with five hundred feet of rope to make it possible. Dave

And Dave Black is my new hero. Not only did he fix ropes, they were a thing of beauty -- solid as a rock and very well placed indeed. That exit would have been nigh unto impossible without the ropes.

That Black Hole trip was nothing short of nuts! But oh, the memories.... It is one of those trips that until you do it, you don't get it. Oh the insanity! And I am still smiling. ;-)

It was great to see so many familiar faces and rub shoulders, albeit frozen wet suit shoulders, with you all.

I won't try to improve on Scott's description of the BH - "insanity" works for me. x2 w/ regards to Dave Black.

Fun FF. Lots of great partners; special thanks to folks like Aaron who rallied us for a Monday Shenanigans. Great food - many thanks Lisa, Eric and Bruce! I'm bummed I had to bolt home right after the BH, and missed the Jan 1 feast...

Forgot to throw the camera in the pack the first several days, but some pics from 12/30 - 1/1 can be found at http://tinyurl.com/y9t38y7 .

  5. John - your pictures are awesome!

It may have been cold, but the scenery is beautiful with all the snow. I like how everyone has a smile on their face.

From those of us that had to stay home, thanks for sharing your pictures! -Felicia

Oh ... someone is missing a chest harness. I found it in my truck. I've been known to steal while sleep walking, but I'm usually better at getting the really expensive stuff that I'd actually use, so I figured someone left it behind. Let me know if it's yours!

    sweet photos rich!

that day in trail reminds me how we ALMOST bailed on the whole damn trip... only to get back to camp and there were something like 15 more people, and they had a lot more enthusiasm than i did at that point.

ended up being such an awesome fest, glad to meet you and all the others.

    stoked!

After returning from walking the guys down to that insanity, which was the Black Hole this year, Sarah & I went back to camp. John of the dutch oven crew nearly had us roped into staying, but had we stayed for that fantastic dinner - we'd have had to drive out in the dark on icy roads, etc. We quite enjoyed John's company while we packed up! What a great guy!

What great FUN FF was this year! Extra special for me of course because I got to experience it with my daughter & she got to meet so many of my wonderful friends she's heard about through the years. And they got to meet her!!! She got to experience something Californians rarely do; camping in extreme weather. One morning we awoke to 9 Degrees of freeze! Absolutely everything in our tent froze including Sarah's contacts! I have no idea what the barometer dipped to during the wee hours, but I'm guessing negative teens - quite an experience. By the way - we came back to temps in the high 70's!

Here's a quick rundown of our road trip activities since leaving sunny warm OC: We left on Sunday night - stayed at Goofball's house in Vegas that eve & were treated to an awesome dinner of ribs/asparagus/salad/portabello mushrooms and wonderful company. Thanks Jason!!! You and Luke are awesome!

Met up later the next day with Nickie and Bill at Ponderosa Lodge where they picked us up (& our gear) in a snowmobile/sled and took us to their lovely cabin in the woods. We spent the day sledding in a wonderland of deep powder! Especially fun was dragging behind the snowmobile at 30 - 40 MPH! What a great day! Party in the cabin that night - AWESOME!

Tues: Sarah & I snow shoed to the head of Echo canyon whilst Bill & Nickie shuttled gear via snowmobile, then we all headed to North-Wash. Party that night - AWESOME! Oh, and the food was fantastic - provided by Bruce, and I don't know who else, but there were two other dishes of delectable for everyone to partake of! What a treat!

Weds. Did a mini chick fest ramble down Blarney. That is after we found our way out of Shillelagh. Sarah & I had great fun with Malia, Carol & Barbie! Party that night - AWESOME!

Thurs (NYE): Woke up latish - was treated to a fantastic dutch oven breakfast thanks to Lisa & Eric. Sarah & I did West Lep with Brejcha, Don & Cody, and Eric! Where's that picture of the snow man we rapped off of Eric? Great times!!!! Party that night was AWESOME on top of AWESOME! Dinner was a fantabulous seafood gumbo dutch oven meal graciously provided by Don & Cody (with a little help from Sarah & I - but not much). The dinner was followed by drinking, carousing, fighting (Dan is one angry dude, but he's very entertaining!), stolen cars, lots of fresh snow! Did I mention booze? Soooo much booze - so much drunkenness! There was even a naked man running around too! Sooooooo much fun!!!! :)

What a BLAST! I wish I was back there right now to experience it all over again! But no...I am here in OC...waiting impatiently for next year's FF! Stoke-o-loco 2010! <---- Dan Ransom's descriptor! I like it!!! :)

Thanks Ram & Tom for hosting this incredible get-together every year! Thanks all of you awesome folks who showed up! It was wonderful connecting/hangin/playing with you all!

    ~R Pix & video soon....

Freezefest is based in North Wash at the Sandthrax campsite (aka The Leper Colony), and runs Dec 26th to Jan 1st at least. It is not organized.

My brief stopovers in the past have forever convinced me that you are all completely whacked! I will think fond thoughts of all of you as I drink my Christmas toddy, in front of the fire, while watching videos in my jams - which is how the holidays were meant to be celebrated! Ahhhh the Kahlua Brownies! Aren't you proud of my restraint in not reminding you this year? Folks, these brownies are so RICH that they can get left out, uncovered, in the cold and still remain moist and soft! To die for! Thanks. You are an honorary member of the Fest whether you like it or not! Ram, the brownie hog.

Alicia!!! We miss you every Freeze fest!!! And the Kahlua brownies you so dependably & generously supply every year are cherished & then subsequently mourned when they're gone! Long after the last brownie has been consumed, the memory of them lingers on!   If only my camera battery hadn't died in the middle of this video - it would have been great evidence of the fact that the brownies live on long after they don't.

We had just emerged from the Black Hole - changed, and were waiting for the shuttle vehicles to arrive when I caught young Edward on video creating a sculpture from clay. He walked over (& sadly this is the part I didn't get on film) and said "Look, I made a Kahlua brownie". He had crafted from the clay of the land, a swirly colored rectangle that looked just like a brownie! We were all very sad that it wasn't edible! :)

I don't know how to post just the video from work (so many things blocked here) but if you click on the last photo in the series - you should be able to view it. -

Happy warm Christmas to you! Looking forward to seeing you in May!!!

I have, once again, prepared the Honorary Freeze Fest Kahlua Brownies. They will be in attendance, but despite all your Siren Songs, I will not. My brief stopovers in the past have forever convinced me that you are all completely whacked! I will think fond thoughts of all of you as I drink my Christmas toddy, in front of the fire, while watching videos in my jams - which is how the holidays were meant to be celebrated! Love to you all - Alicia
