Recently, our group went down to Escalante and did a number of canyons on the East side of the river from Choprock/Kaleidoscope on down to Middle Little Baker. What we learned is that you probably don't want to go down river from Fence Creek to do Middle Little Baker, even if you're going to be backpacking in the area for a week. We used Michael Kelsey's directions for the approach and they worked just fine for us other than we fine tuned it a little bit. Instead of going all the way up West Little Baker and back down to almost the river along the bench above the river, we went just above the entrance to West Little Baker and climbed up over the little ridge and dropped down to the other side where Middle Little Baker is. It involves more scrambling type stuff, but it's not too hard; very worth the mile or more it cuts off. Once we were on the bench above Middle Little Baker, we could look across the Escalante canyon and see the trail down from the Early Weed Bench. That's the way I'd go in next time, no questions asked. The drop in point/entrance on the map is approximate. You'll know it when you see it if you go.
