http://www.deseretnews.com/article/...by-tree-limb-severed-by-lightning-strike.html ZION NATIONAL PARK — Two hikers are expected to survive after being hit by a falling tree limb caused by a lightning strike, authorities say. The victims — a male and a female — were on the Emerald Pools Trail on Thursday afternoon at the time of the lightning strike, said Zion National Park spokeswoman Aly Baltrus. The strike hit a cottonwood tree, causing a branch about 8 inches in diameter to fall and hit both hikers, according to Baltrus. They were taken to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. Their ages were not known Friday. And you thought the rappel was the dangerous part.
Not at all. I'll bet more people have died on the Emerald Pools trail than on the last rap of Heaps. Gordon(Who HAS read "How to Lie With Statistics")
I have a couple members of my usual group who wear their helmet for the approach & until we reach the car. I've always made fun of them as I for one am usually eager to take it off & replace it with my hat. I guess I now understand their reasoning.
I've seen two significant head injuries between the last rappel and the vehicle from people with helmets in their pack.
