Hi y'all. Looking for current conditions in Zion. Did that storm lay down a lot of snow? What are conditions and recommendations for dry canyons in that area? Thanks!

Storm put down around 5" at elevation. There is still snow on most north facing slopes above the canyon floor. The virgin is flowing 72 CFS out of the narrow so they are seeing runoff from the snow melt.

It seems doubtful that you would find any dry technical canyons in Zion in winter. Maybe try the Vegas area if you are already in Zion.

Spry is probably very dry at the moment too. A good one in winter, as it mostly faces south... assuming you can get up to it.

Lodge faces north, as does Grotto. Telephone is dry, but up high.

@madman_lee Theres a Hotel in Hanksville, come to Freezefest, spend the evening around the fire with good people and make plans for the next day, and when it's time to pack it in at night head to town for a nice warm bed.

Part of the issue, Mr. Lee, is that a "dry" canyon tends to be one that does not normally have swims. So, even dry canyons in Zion tend to have pools that might require getting wet. And yes, there are very few that don't have at least SOME getting wet. Not a problem in summer, CAN be a big problem in winter. And then again: "Only do canyons in winter that you have done before" is the rule, so you would already know this.

Totally understand. I am just curious since we have had the driest December on record in 40 years, and the temps this week will be above freezing all week. Has winter started? (Im not trying to be a smart ass).

Winter has started. While very little snow and unusually warm temps are present, the daylight hour count is still quite small, and the nights are quite chilly (and rather long). There is snow in north-facing places and ice in places that are normally wet. Therefore, it is not summer, and not even "late fall".

    Caution advised.

I found Cherry Canyon in the VRG to be quite nice.

At least some of the Las Vegas area slots are completely dry, if you head a bit south of Zion. We did Keyhole today and there wasn't even a damp spot.

We were thinking of doing the Cherry Canyon Tom mentions, but the river wade looked about waist deep yesterday. Maybe it came down or will come down though? We can take a peek Friday.

Just did spry canyon today and the approach is clear of snow. Will alternate rappels you can avoid all of the water except the last knee pool. The knee deep pool could be hike around but you would miss some good canyon if doing so. We made it car to car in 5 hours.

Yeah there was ice by the first rappel, but nothing that would cause any issue at the current time.
