I had previously had success with a small cold chisel, cutting off studs. But these bolts at not threaded (above rock level) and the steel itself is very good steel, so the cold chisel did not do much. It would be fun to know who put in this style of bolt... in many places in Zion. - Anyone? Bueller?

They are made of high-quality steel. Lower grade steels yield fairly easily to the cold chisel, not these. Better might be a longish wrench and a cheater bar and just torque it, but it could break anywhere on the shaft. On high-quality studs sticking out 3/4", I have just made a mound of epoxy putty around it and covered that in sand... not the best, but it makes it largely unnoticeable if in the right spot.

Lighter than a cold chisel...maybe not as fun to use though.

I've brought a full frame hack saw before. Fits nicely against the backpanel inside the pack. Not all that handy. Hmmm, wonder where mine is???

The shank on those bits is awfully short and a 3/8 piece of alloy steel is a lot of work on one little battery.

Some bolts you may or may not want to use, from various countries. These washer/chain style are used on First Descents, and replaced with real hangers if the canyon gets done again, maybe.

    3 bolt anchor.
Might have cracked when the bolt was torqued up...

    Nope bolt.

    good bolts.

    okay bolts.

Glue-in hoops - very reliable, last forever...

    double U bolts.

    Unless they are seaside...

    bad glue in bolts.

Much better to just use natural anchors... like this!

    Be careful out there...
