Heading out to the Swell soon, has anyone been through Seger's Hole, Cable Canyon, Knotted Rope or Quandary in the last 3ish months? Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
Just curious the water levels if any. For my group just trying to anticipate obstacles and time estimations. Also help me in deciding which of the canyons to prioritize.
It rained a lot in the Swell today so any reports will be out of date right now unless someone did the canyons today.
I did Zero G this weekend and it was pretty full and then it rained and snowed so probably even more full. It has been a while since I last did it so maybe this is old news but at the final rap/down climb at the slung stone there is now a very shiny set of glue bolts with big chains hanging from them looking like a climbing crag. My understanding is that this is bad form as the slung chock stone is bomber and it can be downclimbed. Am I correct in this assessment or am I missing something? Educate me. This popular, roadside, fun, "beginner" canyon has had quite a few rescues there. I believe the bolts were put in so the SAR Team would not continue to be called out to this location. Chains more than 3 links are perhaps a bit much. Perhaps I do not remember it correctly, but if you put a sling around the big boulder and rappel off of that, from where you hook up on rappel why not just walk and slide down to the pool? Is there a higher chockstone that used to be slung? Of course, savvy canyoneers can easily overcome this obstacle without the bolts, without an anchor. But there are a large number of canyoneers doing this canyon that are not in the savvy category. Tom
I was not there but saw the pictures from reliable friends. On the 18th, water in both Quandary and Knotted Rope were about 2 feet down from lips. Cable was low
Our group of 5 did Cable on Monday- upper pothole section was essentially dry. Lower pothole section had a fair amount of water/swimming. Quite the contrast. Took a group through that was looking for their first keeper pothole experience and this was a great canyon for that. With a fair amount of pothole technique learning and dinking around, we finished in 9 hrs. Tuesday we did Quandary and Knotted Rope. With few exceptions, the potholes in both canyons were between 1-2 feet down. Basically easy mode with just enough challenge to make it feel like an adventure. 12.5 hrs for the loop with the long hike in/out. We came up the Factory Butte Road which road crews were actively working on repairing blown out sections from the last round of storms while we were there. We were able to reach the Salt Wash trailhead of Cable and the Muddy crossing for Q/KR but a HC/4WD was necessary for the last roughly 4 miles to each TH. Hopefully that helps give you an idea what to expect.
Thank you, very much appreciated It's been a few years since I've done Seger's & Cable; I'm excited to get out an play in some cold water.
