Just a quick update for those looking to gauge conditions in Alcatraz and or Larry Canyon.

    As of Mar 16-17:
    Alcatraz:
    • Had a fair amount of cold water, I wouldn't say it's full but a number of waist/chest waders @ 6'1"
    • No major issues or obstacles that were out of the ordinary.
    • Depending on Rib cage girth and or gut girth (215 lbs. pushed the very limits) conditions haven't changed to make it easier on you.
    • Pics to follow
    • (Some BETA had it at 3-5hrs. I'd like to personally shake the hand of someone doing full Alcatraz in 3hrs.).
    Larry:
    • Had a fair amount of cold water, waist/chest deep @ 6'1"
    • No major issues or obstacles that were out of the ordinary.
    • Be mindful on the climb out if doing the Standard Exit.
    • Pics to follow

Roads were great, relatively speaking. Not muddy, a few minor ruts; overall not bad.

A special thanks to Scott Rosander who made this weekend possible. A fat man in a skinny canyon needs a great partner.

These are "Can'yons, not "Can't-yons" although I can't bench 2x my weight "just sayin"

That was a great weekend out in "The Roost", buddy! Scott, another buddy and I went through Alcatraz about 5 years ago. I'm 5'11" and weighed 215-220 the first time around. These days I've been able to get down to 180-185 and it made a huge difference for going through a canyon as tight as this one...I certainly didn't get as beat up this time around. It's crazy to think how much those extra lbs add to the wear and tear of every aspect off this sport. Alcatraz was awesome, and the cold water added a bit of spice to the experience. Road trip Ryan has provided some great beta and I need to contribute to his site because I've found the info very helpful, and I would encourage everyone else that uses his site to do the same. That being said, I too would like to shake the hand of anyone that could get that done in 3 hrs, I'm thinking maybe 4 in the best conditions (No water in canyon, nobody in the party getting stuck or slowed down on any obstacle, helicopter assistance up the exit.), maybe 4.
This was the first time through Larry canyon, and it didn't disappoint me at all. I really liked the different degrees of difficulty that it presented to us. It was tighter for longer than I was expecting and I'm glad that we planned on going into both canyons with as little gear as we deemed necessary. I was a little worried about Larry because we had a couple that walked past our camp at 10:30 pm that said they were on the first rap at 10:00 am. Over 12 hours to do the short Larry. Something didn't add up. We did find a lot of bare footprints in canyon the next day, so I'm thinking that they weren't very experienced or spent a lot of time dinking around, but I'm glad we didn't have to do the crack exit in the dark. Anyways, a great weekend all around.

We bailed on Larry Saturday once we got to the initial long stretches of water (large group, no cold water gear). Went to grab our shuttle car and noticed your rap was still rigged into Alcatraz. After seeing and feeling the water levels in Larry, I figured it'd be the same in Alcatraz. It was getting later into the evening, so we decided we'd go back to camp, eat, then drive back and make sure your car was gone. After doing Alcatraz last year, just wanted to make sure you guys were OK in these early and cold conditions. I'm glad to say your car was gone when we did our double check! Us frequent Rooster's have to watch out for each other!! :)

I was down there scouting for the first part of this last week. The roads from HWY24 in all the way to the Big T intersection were better than I-70 coming from Colorado. How much water did you encounter in Alcatraz?

Josh - In Larry, where did you first encounter a significant amount of water?

    Cheers!

Thx, very true, taking a moment to make sure groups are safe is a good habit to have.

In both canyons, the pools were about lower rib cage deep.
Both canyons had consistent water in the 1st half (ankle deep to a few pools, Alcatraz had 1 swimmer that you can avoid if you choose).

Alcatraz: right after the 1st good down climb there is a pool (see pic 6 above) I'd guess within 5min after the 1st rap
Larry: We hiked up the canyon rim, so we entered the canyon at the 1st mandatory rap (50ft), there was water there but it was avoidable. About 5-ish min down canyon depending on your stemming skills is where we entered the water. I was about saving energy knowing I was getting wet either way. (I ended up saving myself maybe 100-200 ft. before water was mandatory.)

No wetsuits, just neo-socks and shoes. Not sure what the ambient temp was when we started @ 11am maybe low 40's???
I'll try and add some Larry pics tonight/and or this weekend.

It was chilly then. I will look at your photos more closely. I'm guessing, based on your beta, that the pothole near the beginning of Alcatraz was full?... EDIT!!!

I see the photo of it! Thank you very much!

The 1st pot hole was maybe hip deep, the rap in the pot hole (see pic 8/9) was lower rib cage. I was in the water setting the rap and getting on the rope, I stayed near the left side of the pot as that was less deep than the right side see pic 9.

We saw a couple of trucks driving around the first rap of Alcatraz as we were coming back on the plateau. Maybe it was you guys around 5:30-6ish? Anyways, I appreciate that you double checked on us, that is pretty cool of you. The water in both canyons was pretty freakin' cold, although Larry seemed to be a couple of degrees colder somehow. Probably mental after a rough night sleeping. It was a great weekend! Glad you guys got out unscathed.
