Wonderland Canyon

 WARNING:

There is insufficient beta for this canyon. Help us improve the Betabase... if you have details to contribute, please submit them to info@canyoncollective.com and you will be credited.

As with all beta, use the information on this page with caution. Obstacles may change or may be dependent on conditions, as well as group skills and comfort levels. Rap counts may increase if downclimbs get rigged as rappels, anchors may get altered or re-rigged, and conditions will vary. Always be prepared for the unexpected (mental, or physical challenges, or gear needs that you did not anticipate), consider your options, and look for the safest alternative for your group to descend the canyon.

Last anchor is rebuilt, but anchors webbing needs to be left extended past the lip of the last rap. I did canyon two weeks ago and we rebuilt the anchor to have it extended over the lip to create a good pull. Last week, I did half of the canyon and the anchor was shortened by a foot and a new 2 to 3" rope groove has appeared in a week. The sandstone is very soft here and the anchor needs to be extended to protect rock and rope pull will become very hard with new rope grooves forming. Fiddlestick is an option since you should have one for the 210' anyways.

The ice is gone but the pools in the upper canyon are full and cold.
The "keeper" in the lower canyon is bone dry.
Anchors are OK. Would be nice to see some webbing replaced or removed all together. Use edge protection, rope grooves are already showing up in this relativley new canyon.

Be advised that the next group travelling through Wonderland Canyon after Feb 7 2015 will not find a suitable pre-constructed anchor at the final rappel and will need to devise their own. We compromised the pre-existing deadman anchor during stuck rope recovery activities (3:1 pulley). So, also be careful pulling the rope on the final rappel as it is a rope grabber. Really cool canyon!
