Monoxide - West Fork

  • The Hype

This is an easy, fun canyon with a couple of drops, some deep walking narrows, and a few downclimbs. It can be combined with an ascent of Monoxide West Fork to make a more complete day.

    Getting There

Drive South from Hanksville on the 95 to mile 15.5 and turn left (east) onto the Burr Point road. Follow the main road for 4.5 miles. Go right at the junction. At 5.5 miles the road crosses a drainage and starts to turn NE. Park here at the intersection of a rough side road heading South.

From here walk SW into the drainage. You'll reach the dryfall which starts the canyon in about 1/2 a mile.

The Canyon - Rating: 3A II   Longest Rap: 60 feet   # of Raps: up to 2

The first part of the canyon is easy walking. Bypass a dryfall on the left, then continue to where it slots up.

When the canyon narrows again there's one easy downclimb into a pothole which looks worse than it is. Soon you'll reach a hot-tub sized pothole above a bigger drop. You can bypass the drop by doing a moderate downclimb along the RDC wall. A lot of parties just choose to rig this.

A few feet below this climb is is the first and only real drop in the canyon, which is about 60 feet off a chockstone or deadman into the canyon below.

From the bottom of the drop it's a nice deep slot with a few down climbs over boulders to the exit.

    The Exit

Follow the canyon until it opens up. A major side canyon comes in from the left (East). This is Monoxide East Fork. At this point you can climb up the sandstone prow between the East and West Forks and find your way back to your car.

A better alternative is to ascend the East Fork. It's mostly easy going with the exception of two easy climbs for which beginners will want a rope. The first climb can be climbed on the sloping right wall (looking up canyon). The second climb is a big boulder pile which can be navigated by climbing up under the boulders. Follow the drainage NE back to your car.

    Red Tape

    No permit required.

This canyon is on BLM land. Groups size limits on BLM land are usually 12 people.
