Lost Spring - North Fork

  • The Hype

    Got a few hours to spare? Lost Spring Canyon, in the heart of the Roost, is a short and sweet little canyon that packs a lot of meat onto a small bone. Being a fairly physical canyon, you'll want full body armor to descend this surprisingly cryptic and beautiful little slot. It's the perfect Sunday morning canyon if you're in a rush to get home, or a great addition to a longer slot in the neighborhood.

    Getting There

    Access Road: The head of Lost Spring Canyon is located off a high-clearance 4WD road deep in Robbers Roost. From roughly mile marker 135.4 on Hwy 24, head east on the unpaved, but fairly well maintained Maze Road for 24.4 miles to what is known as the "Big Tee." There is an information kiosk at this intersection, and it is a significant landmark in the Roost. From this intersection, travel south on the Maze road towards the Hans Flat ranger station, arriving at another signed intersection in 7.1 miles. This is the "little Y" intersection.

    Follow the signs toward Ekker Ranch following the Long Draw Road for 6.8 miles to another fork, where you will turn right and travel a half mile to Angel Point Junction. From here, again turn right (west) and continue for 2.6 miles (passing the Larry Canyon trailhead along the way), until reaching a 4x4 track on your right (38.322872,-110.393608). This is the Lost Spring Junction. Head right (north) from here, and continue 1.5 miles to the head of Lost Spring Canyon. Park here (38.342515,-110.380433).

    From the Trailhead: Drop west immediately into the canyon. The first drop you come to can be skirted around LDC.

    Rappels: 4 rappels, up to 40'

    Additional Risk: Some tight spots--high stemming (10') required for the thicker-boned

    Water: Potential for wading

    Natural Anchors: Robber's Roost is considered a "natural anchor" area. Please be competent with natural anchor evaluation and plan accordingly. Lost Springs Canyon should not have any fixed anchors left behind.

    Gear Recommendations: Rope for rappels up to 40’, 75’ of webbing, slings, rapides, helmet, body armor, small pack

    Flash Flood Danger: Medium

    The Exit

    Soon after the canyon opens up, you'll find an obvious sandstone easement to your left/south (38.343592,-110.392728) that will take you back up to the rim. Meander around minor slickrock domes in an easterly fashion until reaching the head of the canyon, and your vehicle.

    Red Tape

    BLM Land: Lost Spring Canyon is located on BLM land, and currently there are no regulations or access issues.

    Most slot canyons are found on public lands managed by the US Government, although a few can be found on private lands. The US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the National Park Service manage these lands. Each area tends to have unique management issues. As a result, there is not a uniform set of rules governing our use of these lands. For current issues related to canyoneering access, please visit www.americancanyoneers.org.
