Lost Creek

British Columbia beta posted by cirrus2000
  • The Hype

A short and easy canyon, a couple of hours east of Vancouver. Beautiful narrows, nice short swims, and lovely cascades. The canyon can be descended in two styles: rappelling, or jumping.

    Getting There

    Access Road:
From downtown Mission, drive eastbound on Highway 7 for 8 km, to Sylvester Road. Turn northbound (big gas station on the corner is a great spot to stock up on last minute supplies.) Drive 22 km, along pavement, then a well graded logging road. Turn left onto a spur, signed Lost-Lease, and continue 1.3 km, to a spur on the right. Turn up here, and park in the incredibly filthy clearing. As you enter the clearing, look to your left – this is where you’ll find the trail.

    From the Trailhead:
Drop into the trees, and follow the trail down to the creekside. Follow the sound to the top of the waterfall. There are two ways down, here: follow a trail down and around the falls, to the left, or make the 45 foot jump into the plunge pool below…

    The Canyon - Rating: 2/3C I   Longest Rap: 30'   # of Raps: 2

Skills required: Either technical rappel skills, or fearless jumping skills

Rappels: 2 optional rappels, up to 30'

    Exposure Risk: None

Water: Lots. Three or four swims, longest about 75’

Anchor Conditions: All natural, if required.

Gear Recommendations: Ideally, a wetsuit and helmet only. No further equipment is necessary. If rappelling the drops, the longest rappel is about 30’ – full technical gear would be required.

High Flow Danger: Moderate. The canyon can be descended in relatively high water conditions.

    The Exit

The interesting section contains two waterfalls that may appear to be rappels. The first comes about 10 minutes after the 45’ waterfall. 15 minutes later, round a corner in the canyon, past a narrow fin of rock, to another small waterfall. Jump into the pool below, beyond which the canyons opens and flattens. This is the end of “the business”.

The canyon can be ascended without technical gear. Climb both the waterfalls on the left, and make your way back up to the 45’ waterfall. Perhaps try a quick leap here, if you didn’t on the way in…

    Red Tape

The route is on Crown land. There are no known access issues.
