Arscenic

Robbers Roost beta posted by Jeremy Freeman

 WARNING:

There is insufficient beta for this canyon. Help us improve the Betabase... if you have details to contribute, please submit them to info@canyoncollective.com and you will be credited.

As with all beta, use the information on this page with caution. Obstacles may change or may be dependent on conditions, as well as group skills and comfort levels. Rap counts may increase if downclimbs get rigged as rappels, anchors may get altered or re-rigged, and conditions will vary. Always be prepared for the unexpected (mental, or physical challenges, or gear needs that you did not anticipate), consider your options, and look for the safest alternative for your group to descend the canyon.

This one is well worth your time: a well-fluted rap, a fairly deep and narrow slot without becoming truly constrictive, and plenty of fun downclimbs and features.

Odd weather this January. The roads from SLC to Hanksville were dangerously snowy, but it dried out near the town. We got some snow and rain in Hogs 1 & 2, then lots of rain at a nearby campsite overnight. Yet Arscenic, at a higher elevation, was mostly dry with no snow, and short avoidable calf-deep wading on the following day.

The 3 stage rap to start off the canyon requires 195' rope, which is best left for retrieval on the hike out as it would be a difficult pull. I believe slings are in place on natural anchors at each stage, but one long rope is best. I'd estimate that the longest stage requires a fair bit more than the 66 ft RT Ryan suggests. Take time to admire the beautiful flute features mid rappel. The later downclimbs and elevators are not for beginners without handlines, but fun with pads and chicken-wing and chimney techniques. Anyone can fit through. A dark corkscrew caps the playground features so prevalent throughout the slot before the canyon opens a few minutes before you begin the moderate exit hike.
